"When I went to your town on the wide open shore, oh I must confess I was drawn, I was drawn to the ocean." - Dar Williams
We took the kids to Rhode Island yesterday for their first trip to the ocean.
Two of my favorite twins turn thirty this week so we jumped at their fun idea to have a party on the beach.
As the lifeguards packed up for the night our friends headed out to party some more in Providence and our sleepy family of four made our way to this little marina for some clam cakes and Del's. I am not a seafood girl but Sean was born in Rhode Island so his mouth started watering for clam cakes weeks ago when we scheduled our beach day. Dylan loved them, too.
I'm pretty sure it's sacrilege when you're at the shore but I ordered mozzarella sticks. We let Katie try some frozen lemonade and she loved it.
The drive home was stinky but fun because the boys ordered extra clam cakes and ate them the whole way home. We took a bit of the beach back with us in the form of sand and seafood and the kids were happy to be riding in the car. Dylan stayed up an hour past bedtime which was so wonderful for us because if he had fallen asleep he would've stayed awake until midnight. And Kate just slept the whole time and then slept some more when she came home.
Sean was so excited to text his sister to tell her that we had just had clam cakes and Del's lemonade because she's a huge fan and it reminds her of childhood. She replied that they, too, were in Rhode Island for the Waterfire Festival in Providence and our niece and nephew also just had Del's. We laughed so hard. What are the odds!
It was a seriously perfect day. None of us were sunburned, no one was stung by a jellyfish, and we had two very happy kids for the entire trip. Happy early birthday, Brian and Brie!
